Good Requirements and Test Cases to Predict Network/Application Performance
Lorna Robertshaw

ABSTRACT

The functionality, robustness, and usability of software applications are the keys to their successful deployment. But if an application is too slow to respond, it can require costly changes to make it usable. Many mistakes made early on in the project lifecycle can be very costly if they are not caught until the final stages of the project, and mistakes that prevent the application from responding quickly and efficiently are no exception. But, far too often, performance requirements are not adequately factored into Quality Assurance measurements, nor into the design and architecture of the application. In fact, network performance is not typically predicted or measured until late in the testing cycle, if at all! Performance Engineering is a discipline in which the practice ensures that applications and services are able to meet specific performance requirements. It presents a new way of approaching performance management that crosses IT processes and organizations and encompasses the full application life cycle, starting with the requirements. The Application Network Readiness (ANR) methodology, developed by OPNET Technologies, is based on the knowledge that the end-to-end performance of a system is dependent upon the interactions between application, servers, and the network, and that understanding these dependencies provides a basis for proactive, predictive performance management. ANR enables companies to make better, more well-balanced decisions about application architecture and infrastructure investments, and ensures the successful deployment of new applications and application changes.
Specifically, the attendee will learn:

  • How conducting an Application Network Readiness Assessment can prevent failed deployments, project delays, and costly redesigns
  • How to write requirements that budget for performance
  • Useful metrics that can predict network and system performance
  • Proven techniques for adding performance testing to the testing process
  • How cutting edge Application Performance Management solutions are being used in these efforts today
